On Tuesday, May 16 2017, Universitas Airlangga welcomed Dr. Eugene Sebestian as the New Director of Australia Indonesia Center (AIC) and some representatives from AIC, such as Prof. Richard Price as the Research Director, Helen Fletcher Kennedy as the chief operating officer, and Kevin Evans as the Indonesian Director of AIC at Manajemen Buliding Kampus C Universitas Airlangga. Prof. Mochammad Amin Alamsjah, Ir., M.Si., Ph.D. as Vice Rector III of Universitas Airlangga led the meeting alongside Universitas Airlangga’s researchers that join the AIC Research Project such as Ahmad Chusnu Romdhoni from Faculty of Medicine, Hari Fitrianto from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, and Sony Kusumasondjaja from Faculty of Economy and Business.

The visit was mainly to introduce the new board members of the second phase of Australia Indonesia Centre. Dr. Eugene stated that the board members of AIC second phase are more than delighted to further deepen partnership and expand research with Universitas Airlangga. On the previous phase of AIC, Universitas Airlangga’s researches mainly revolved around Health Sciences topics. By this year, Universitas Airlangga will try to expand the researches on Social Sciences topics. He also uttered that the second phase of AIC focuses more on the integrated research.

Dr. Eugene said that Surabaya has a strategic position because Surabaya is a port city. As a port city, usually the area around the port is well developed. However, in the case of Surabaya, the area around the port itself has a very poor economic condition compared to the city center area, which is more developed. This phenomenon is interesting to be the topics of research. With this reversed condition, there has to be a changing policy to make the economic growth more inclusive. This is where the researchers of Universitas Airlangga and Australia Indonesia Center can step in. Not only the researchers, but also the government and the private sectors as well. Universitas Airlangga proposed that in the future, the research topics under AIC program is not only beneficial to the AIC and Universitas Airlangga, but can also contribute to solve the city’s or province’s problems.
