Japanese Government Scholarship for 2019 (Japanese Studies Students) Osaka University

Osaka University will offer scholarships by the Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for academic study in Japan to students as Japanese Government Scholarship Students through university recommendation as outlined below.

Qualifications and Conditions for Applicants

  • Unair students who intend to increase their understanding of the Japanese language, Japanese studies, and/or Japanese culture while in Japan, and who will come to Japan from abroad.
  • Applicants must be nationals of countries approved for this program by the Japanese government. (Applicants who possess Japanese citizenship are not eligible to apply.)
  • Applicants should belong to a department at a foreign university overseas and major in an area related to the Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time of arriving in Japan, and after they return to their home country.
  • Applicants must have at least two years of experience in Japanese language study.
  • Possess JLPT at least N2 level.
  • Applicants should be physically and mentally able to complete their studies at the university.
  • Applicants should be prepared to devote themselves to the studies of this program throughout the year and having enthusiasm for research work and class participation is a must.
  • Those who major in fields related to the Japanese language or Japanese culture.
  • Those who have studied Japanese language or Japanese culture at a university for one year or more as of September 2019.
  • In principle applicants must acquire new “College Student” (ryugaku) visas before entering Japan and then enter Japan with the new “College Student” residence status.

Required Documents

  • Application form with applicant’s photo (two-sided copying)
  • Certificate of university enrollment
  • Certified academic record of the university currently enrolled
  • Recommendation letter from the representative of the affiliated institution to the president of Osaka University
  • Recommendation from the applicant’s academic advisor (using the prescribed form from Osaka University)
  • A copy of the applicant’s passport or an attested copy of applicant's family register
  • A document which proves that the applicant has been studying Japanese language or Japanese culture for one year or more (this is only to be submitted by applicants whose transcript does not show that he/she has studied Japanese language or Japanese culture for one year or more)
  • Questionnaire for telephone interview
  • Certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) higher than Level N2 or Japanese Language proficiency verification by a language instructor of the university. (using the prescribed form from Osaka University)

* Please prepare all documents in A4 size in Japanese or in English. Do not use stapler.

Program Benefits

  • Monthly Stipends: 120,000 yen per month
  • Traveling Costs to/from Japan
  • Tuition and other fees: Entrance examination fees, enrollment fees, tuition fees will be borne by Osaka University
