Singapore Management University Research Internship and Summer School Opportunities!

Singapore Management University (SMU) are proud to present the Global Summer Program 2017 and Internship with SMU Lien Centre for Social Innovation. Here the following programs description:

Internship with SMU Lien Centre for Social Innovation Application deadline: 7 April 2017

We would like to share an exciting opportunity at the Lien Centre for Social Innovation (LCSI), housed at SMU. For a program that lasts 8 weeks, we have a total of 6 positions available spanning Research, Innovation Design, and Editorial/Communications/Social Media. These are unpaid positions, so students will have to locate their own funding. However, LCSI is setting aside a small budget for 1 or 2 qualified applicants from the Southeast Asia region, so we hope that it is an encouraging factor for potential candidates who might be concerned about the cost.

A. Summer Associate (Research) program duration: 8 weeks, 12 June to 4 August 2017
Support Provided:

  • Research Methods training
  • Introduction to case-study writing
  • Mentoring support throughout internship from Research Fellow

B. Summer Associate (Innovation Design) program duration: 8 weeks, 12 June to 4 August 2017
Associates’ duties include (but may not be limited to):

  • Conduct targeted design research into user segments and needs.
  • Work collaboratively to define a problem and user group with which to iterate prototyped solutions.
  • Utilize human-centred design principles and tools to make as much progress as possible toward a prototype of a new social innovation.
  • Steward partnerships and relationships with all stakeholders in a responsible, respectful, and mutually beneficial way.
  • Produce a design brief that documents all findings and lays out a pathway for future teams to implement the solution identified. 

Support provided:

  • Mentoring and guidance by the Centre’s staff
  • Embedded in network of social innovators at SMU and potential selected partners
  • Community of peers working in different capacities within the Centre
  • Support from Centre staff on logistics, including arrival, housing, etc.

  • Get involved in an innovative project and gain practice operating on the cutting edge of social change
  • Enhance your design research and innovation skillsets
  • Get exposed to the national and regional social innovation landscape

SMU will be looking for all candidates to have:

  • Keen interest in social innovation and the Southeast Asia region
  • Degree/coursework/experience in social innovation / entrepreneurship, design research, human-centred design, and/or one of the issue areas identified above.
  • Openness to learn from each other and a new environment. SMU want team players!

C. Summer Associate (Editorial/Social Media) program duration: 8 weeks, 12 June to 4 August 2017
Associates’ duties include (but are not limited to):
Social Media Associate

  • Assisting with the management of LCSI’s web presence, especially Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. Familiarity with different social media platforms and previous experience in social media management preferred
  • Creating and supporting campaigns, and producing engaging social media content
  • Assisting with editing and updating the Centre’s website
  • Producing video materials for social media platforms; video-editing and closed captioning skills strongly preferred
  • Providing support to the team during events

Editorial Associate

  • Organizing and researching projects and summarizing written material
  • Transcribing interviews and fact checking
  • Basic copyediting and proofreading to ensure style consistencies, in keeping with LCSI house style and/or Chicago Manual of Style (16th edition)
  • Image sourcing and permissions clearance
  • Administrative tasks, e.g. issuance and filing of writer agreements, updating of author database & compilation of contributor mailing lists, overall schedule management
  • Communicating with vendors (e.g. photographers, designers, printers, etc.) at various stages of the production process

Support provided:

  • Content management experience of the Centre’s social media accounts and publication
  • Mentorship from experienced programme managers and editorial consultant

  • Exposure to the regional social innovation landscape
  • Contribute to the growing international presence of LCSI

Beyond the skills listed in the tasks above, SMU would like candidates with:

  • Keen interest in social innovation and the Southeast Asia region
  • Degree/coursework/experience in communications/journalism, although not required
  • An eye for detail and good time-management skills
  • Openness to learn from each other and a new environment. SMU want team players!

SMU Global Summer Programme 2017
Program duration: 4 weeks, 3 to 28 July 2017

We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that SMU will be launching its 3rd Global Summer Program, from 3 to 28 July 2017 (4 weeks). Last year’s program welcomed 140 students from 19 different countries (including Australia, Canada, China, France, India, Germany, Mexico, Russia, Spain, UK, USA etc.).

Requirement:

  • Minimum 1 year of university studies completed by summer 2017
  • Grade Point Average of 3.0 out of 4, or equivalent
  • High fluent in English (IELTS >6.5, TOEFL iBT>79, TOEFL ITP>550)

*Students taking one course can pick from either cluster, while students taking two courses should pick one course per cluster.

**The courses are suited for students in (but not limited to) the following disciplines: Accounting, Asian Studies, Business, Criminology, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Humanities, Information Systems, Innovations, International Studies, IT, Law, Management, Marketing, Social Sciences etc.
