"Rabu Keroncong" Musical Performance at Universitas Airlangga

On Wednesday (11/7) Universitas Airlangga had the pleasure of welcoming “Rumput” a Keroncong Band from Richmond, USA for a performance at the Faculty of Humanities. The event, dubbed “Rabu Keroncong” was a musical workshop and performance by the Band as part of their Indonesian tour.

The event started with opening remarks by Prof. Djoko Santoso, the First vice Rector of Universitas Airlangga who personally welcome the band to Universitas Airlangga. The event was then continued to the next session, the Workshop regarding Keroncong and American Folk Music. Delivered by Mr. Danis Sugiyanto from Institut Seni Indonesia and Ms. Hannah Standiford who’s the lead singer in “Rumput” band. The band itself comprises of ten people, each have different instruments to play such as violin, ukulele, guitar, as well as coordinating the ‘wayang’ shadow puppets.

Rabu Keroncong gave Universitas Airlangga students a lot of insight on the art of Keroncong as a musical genre. During the workshop, both Mr. Danis and Ms. Hannah gave information regarding the heritage, background and techniques in mastering Kerocong, especially the singing techniques. During the event, the band “Rumput” was able to deliver some classic Keroncong songs such as Jali-Jali, a Betawi folk song as well as a musical shadow puppet show of the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, with the combination of Keroncong and American Folk Music in telling the story.
