Seminar "Makanan Dan Kesehatan"

Wednesday, 14th of September 2016, International Office and Partnership UNAIR and Institut Français d'Indonésie (IFI) Surabaya held a seminar “Makanan dan Kita” from 9 a.m. to 14.00 p.m. It was held in Excellence with Morality Hall, Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Airlangga. The seminar was opened by opening speech from Vice Rector I, Prof. Djoko Santoso, dr., Ph.D., Sp.PD., K-GH. and Veronique Mathelin the Director of IFI Surabaya, this seminar attended by hundreds of participant from various backgrounds. Dr. Fiastuti Witjaksono as nutritionist from Universitas Indonesia was invited to be the main speaker of the seminar, Triana Kesuma Dewi, M.Sc and Afif Kurniawan, M.Psi from Faculty of Psychology UNAIR also invited as the speakers. The seminar was conducted to raise the awareness of the importance keeping our health by monitoring our diet.
After finishing their presentations, the seminar was closed with a film about a social phenomenon about food which created better understanding regarding the role of food in our life.

Here the summary of the Seminar:

Keeping a healthy body and being productive are important as we often neglect on what we eat. Food is one of many aspects that affect our body’s condition. A good eating habit and healthy diet are the keys to keep our body in healthy condition because many diseases can be prevented. Nowadays, people have high mobility in their activities; therefore the necessity of healthy diet is not the priority of those who have less time to think what they eat every day. Instead of good diet, many people choose to have instant food and packaged food because of its easiness to be served and the tastiness it has. It is one out of many factors that causes the high number of people who suffer from cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Fiastuti Witjaksono, a nutritionist from Universitas Indonesia said that food intake needs to be adjusted based on the individual daily activities. The participant of seminar “Makanan dan Kita” (Food and Us) which took place in Excellence with Morality Hall, Psychology Faculty of Universitas Airlangga, were university students, high schoolers and also others who came from various backgrounds, such as private company employees, lecturers and local residents. It turned out that most participants did not eat in a healthy way every day. For example, they did not eat what the nutritionist advised, that we should have five portions of fruit and vegetable. Dr. Fiastuti explained the risks that the participant could get if they keep continuing the unhealthy diet, such as higher chance of getting cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. The healthy diet should not be perceived by only eating protein-rich foods, or eating just fruits and vegetables in a day. Moreover, the speaker explained, that there was no rule regarding what kind of fruits or vegetables that we should eat every day, thus there was no reason not to consume fruits and vegetables just because they were expensive or it had limited quantity. The explanation was followed by tips to regulate the daily intake of carbohydrate, protein, and fat; moreover, the activity that could be an alternative to replace exercise. Walking to the campus, or office and home exercise are the activities that could be done.

You Are What You Eat

The condition of our body and our mood, such as being cheerful, full of energy, and hard to focus, are the manifestation of what we consume. So are the skin condition, beautiful skin, dry, hair loss, and also the body shape which was fat, thin, tall or short. Thus, knowing what kind of healthy food that could bring betterment towards our body and our mood is important. Food can be categorized as healthy and unhealthy. Food that could fulfil the necessity of personal nutrition characterized by having high fibre and fresh is categorized as healthy food. Meanwhile, food with less nutrition and does not fulfil the necessity of one’s body, such as “kerupuk” (crispy snacks), junk food, packaged foods with sweetener and preservatives, is included as unhealthy. Therefore, if we want a healthy body, it is important to eat healthy food also.

Eating Disorder

Although our appearances and our body shapes become the attention of many people nowadays, the eating pattern does not usually fit to one’s need. Normally, we eat when we are hungry, and we stop eating when we are full. There is a case that an overweight person would stay hungry and try not to eat anything in a day just to become thin. On the other hand, a thin person would keep trying to be thin by eating “sufficiently”. There are many beliefs that are wrong about someone’s ideal body. Budi, as one of the participants, mentioned that he liked a woman with thin and short body. His argument was also supported by other male participants when they were asked about the ideal body of a woman. That question was based on the fact that many anorexia and bulimia cases happened to women because of their willingness, furthermore, their surrounding who wanted them to be thin.

It is necessary to know that BMI (Body Mass Index) could be the base or the parameter of whether a person’s weight can be categorized as ideal weight, underweight, or overweight. Therefore, when a person’s BMI is in a normal range, which is between 18,5 until 22,5, there is no need for that person to make himself or herself thinner. In other case, someone who is in the overweight category has no instant way to change themselves in normal category.

In this case, changing the mind set of people is needed and prioritized, that our body needs necessary food and thinner is not an option. It needs more cooperation from multilayers of society to solve eating disorder which was caused by body dissatisfaction.
